Edith Tzeng, MD

Edith Tzeng, MD, the 2001 Wylie Scholar, is currently the Samual P. Harbison Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the Chief of Vascular Surgery at the Veterans’ Administration Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

What was your FAVR funded research?

The FAVR funded research involved developing a therapy with nitric oxide to prevent cells from growing too fast (hyperplasia) when there has been a vascular injury or to prolong a bypass graft. Currently, we are in clinical trials.

What impact did the Wylie Scholar Award have on your ability to continue research?

One of the battles of academic surgery is being able to have adequate nonclinical time to actually carry out the research. The financial support provided by the award helped to demonstrate the importance of my work and the need to be given the time to carry it out.

Since receiving the Wylie Scholar Award, I received the American Heart Association Established Investigator Award for $500,000 and important NIH funding.
